Work Shape Intelligence
Scrum And The Broader Ecosystem of Work

Scrum is powerful but too often organizations try to use it everywhere: for sustainment, compliance, or even contractual driven work. The result? Frustration, hollow events, and leaders and teams questioning Scrum’s value.

This session introduces Work Shape Intelligence (WSI), a simple but practical lens for identifying different “shapes” of work such as exploration, growth initiatives, platforms, sustainment, contract driven, and business processes. Participants will learn how to evaluate their current work shape mix, align Scrum to the shapes where it thrives while protecting teams from being forced into leveraging Scrum when misaligned with the dominate work shapes within the value creation ecosystem.

Key learning outcomes:

  • Recognize why Scrum feels “broken” in some contexts and why it’s not.

  • Use WSI to understand the potential need for work mode shifts.

  • WSI and backlog management.

  • Use WSI to negotiate with leadership and set healthy team boundaries.

  • Strengthen Scrum’s position by clarifying where / when it creates the most value.

This talk reframes Scrum as a precisely valuable tool inside a broader ecosystem of work elevating its role for best fit rather than diluting it to do a little of everything.
