If Agile Teams Are Self-Managing, What Is the Leader’s Job?

Agile teams need the freedom to make decisions. But if teams are empowered and self-managing, where does the leader fit?

That’s one of the questions Matthew Kircher of Navy Federal Credit Union will explore at Scrum Day Madison on October 15 in his session, “Beyond the Framework.”

Matthew points out that many Agile frameworks don't provide an obvious role for executive leaders. Yet leaders are still accountable for outcomes.

The answer isn't to take control back. Instead, leaders need to create an environment where teams can succeed.

As Matthew explains, leaders have to be willing to trust the people they hired and empowered while creating the psychological safety teams need to make decisions without operating from fear.

Join Matthew and the Scrum Day Madison community on October 15, 2026.
