Beyond the framework
How Leadership and Culture Determine Agile Success

Organizations can adopt Scrum roles, ceremonies, tools, and terminology and still fall short of becoming genuinely agile. Drawing on Matt’s doctoral research with experienced Agile practitioners in large financial institutions, this session explores what happens when new ways of working collide with long-standing leadership habits, decision structures, and organizational expectations. The central question is not whether teams are following Agile practices, but whether the surrounding environment allows those practices to produce trust, learning, and meaningful change.

Through the voices and experiences of research participants, the session reveals how Agile transformation unfolds in practice: where experimentation is encouraged, where control persists, and where teams struggle to speak openly or act with real authority. Their stories also show how governance, data, and emerging technologies can either strengthen adaptability or quietly recreate the same constraints Agile was meant to overcome. Attendees will leave with practical ways to create better conditions for team voice, shared ownership, earlier collaboration, and sound judgment as their organizations continue to evolve.
